Tutorials this week

Tutorials this week will focus on the whole unit “Fields and Rivers”.

Readings (all tutorial readings are in Sources for the Frameworks of World History available for purchase or rent from the UNBC bookstore):

  • 3.1 “The Punitive Expedition of Yin from Shu Jing” fromĀ The Classic of History
  • 3.2Ā The Code of Hammurabi
  • 3.3 “A Peace Treaty between Ramses II and Hattusili III, the Egyptian version”
  • 3.4 “The Hymn to Purusha fromĀ The Rig Veda
  • 3.5Ā Harappan Unicorn Seal (this is an image). You can see a clearer version of it here:Ā Harappan Unicorn Seal

Questions to think about:

  • Is the ā€œThe Punitive Expedition of Yin from Shu Jingā€ a primary or secondary source? Can it be both? How is its categorization as a historical source different from ā€œThe Code of Hammurabiā€ or ā€œA Peace Treaty between Ramses II and Hattusili III, the Egyptian versionā€?
  • How are visual sources such as ā€œThe Harappan Unicorn Sealā€ different as primary sources from written ones? What do visuals add to our understand of history?
